The Modern Interaction of the Law and Social Media

Prior to arriving in New York for the ABA-YLD Spring Conference, I was slated for an interview with the American Bar Association social media team. Just as I did in New Orleans, during the Midyear Meeting, I stood in front of a camera and addressed a few topics important to the law, in particular social media. Jazmine Beltran, the social media coordinator for the ABA, informed me that the ABA planned to do a social media push in June to increase interest for young lawyers joining the ABA. Although the State Bar of Michigan is a mandatory bar, sometimes we struggle with young lawyer engagement. This year, the State Bar of Michigan Young Lawyers Section has put an emphasis on media and marketing through social media. We’ve added a TikTok page to our Facebook and Instagram social media presence. Social media has proved useful with getting young lawyers engaged and signed up for our programming. With bringing the Young Lawyers Summit back in person for the first time since 2019, the importance in social media is at an all-time high. We are running promotional content daily all with the common goal of getting members of the State Bar to the Summit. This year’s Summit will include content that will prove useful for guiding and shaping the careers of young lawyers and law students. We are hoping our social media presence has done its job to get people engaged.
