The Detroit Trailblazer: MYLES J. BAKER

Detroit, once known as the automotive capital of the world, has seen remarkable transformations over the years, and its legal industry is no exception. As the city continues to reinvent itself, the legal landscape has evolved to meet the changing needs of its residents, businesses, and communities.

Historically, Detroit’s legal sector has been shaped by the city’s rich industrial heritage and its role as a hub for manufacturing and commerce. Law firms established themselves as pillars of the community, providing essential services ranging from corporate counsel to litigation support.

In the heart of Detroit’s legal landscape, a remarkable individual has ascended to new heights, carving out a path of excellence and breaking barriers along the way. Myles J. Baker, Esq., a trailblazing African American lawyer whose recent promotion to partner at Dickinson Wright, not only marks a significant milestone in his career but also stands as a beacon of inspiration for aspiring legal professionals across the city.

In a profession historically dominated by a lack of diversity, Mr. Baker stands out as a testament to perseverance, talent, and unwavering dedication. His journey to partnership reflects not only his individual achievements but also the broader strides being made towards greater inclusivity within the legal community.

Born and raised in Detroit, Attorney Baker was no stranger to the challenges faced by African Americans in pursuing careers traditionally deemed out of reach. However, armed with a tenacious spirit and an unyielding resolve, he pursued his passion for law with vigor, determined to make his mark on an industry ripe for change.

Throughout his career, Attorney Baker has distinguished himself through his exceptional legal acumen, meticulous attention to detail, and steadfast commitment to justice. His expertise in litigation and cannabis law has earned him recognition not only from his peers but also from clients who have come to rely on his expertise and guidance.

Yet, perhaps even more commendable than his professional achievements is Mr. Baker’s role as a trailblazer and advocate for diversity and inclusion within the legal field. As one of only 30 African American partners in Detroit, he understands the importance of representation and actively works to create opportunities for others who may face similar obstacles on their path to success.

In his new role as partner, Mr. Baker is poised to effect change not only within his firm but also within the broader legal community. With a seat at the table, he intends to amplify the voices of underrepresented minorities, championing initiatives aimed at fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion at all levels of the profession.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Mr. Baker remains deeply rooted in his community, using his platform to mentor aspiring young lawyers, volunteer with local organizations, and advocate for social justice causes close to his heart. His commitment to giving back serves as a reminder that true success is not measured solely by one’s professional achievements but by the impact they have on the lives of others.

Since his new role as partner, Mr. Baker has only grown more ambitious. “To be a partner is every lawyer’s dream, but to be the best partner, I need to be the best lawyer.” He further explains, “Success cannot be solely measured on your achievements, but also your contributions to your community. To be the best lawyer, I need to serve my community.”

As Detroit continues to evolve and grow, Mr. Baker’s elevation to partner represents a significant milestone in the city’s ongoing journey towards greater diversity and inclusion. His story serves as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the boundless possibilities that arise when individuals dare to dream and defy the odds.

Beyond individual achievements, Mr. Baker’s ambition is characterized by his spirit of collaboration, mentorship, and support. His goal is to establish platforms for networking, professional development, and community outreach, fostering a sense of unity and solidarity among the community.

Mr. Baker’s dedication to his profession is extended beyond his expertise, but his willingness to give back. Mr. Baker is a vital member of the State Bar of Michigan’s Young Lawyers Section (YLS). As a dedicated council member, Mr. Baker offers guidance and mentorship to the young legal community.

As a committed member of YLS, Mr. Baker utilizes his Partnership to educate young lawyers. “Being partner adds a different dynamic when approaching young lawyers. I want to relate to young lawyers and let them know that I was in their position. By relating to my peers, we can understand and grow together.”

As Detroit’s newest African American partner, Myles J. Baker is not only a symbol of hope and inspiration but a catalyst for change in a profession that continues to strive towards a more equitable and just future.

When asked if he has any more goals, Mr. Baker stated “Being partner is just the beginning of my journey. What I learned is my duty to pass on. I believe that you lift as you climb. I want to see my city grow, and I want to be a part of a community that helps each other prosper.”

As Detroit continues to evolve and flourish, the contributions of its Black legal community remain essential to its progress and prosperity. By amplifying their voices, celebrating their achievements, and supporting their endeavors, we honor the legacy of those who have paved the way and ensure that their impact endures for generations to come.
