On Saturday, January 27, 2024, the Wolverine Bar Association’s annual Student Resume & Interview Workshop was held at Bodman PLC, in collaboration with the African American Partners Collaborative (AAPC) and the State Bar of Michigan’s Young Lawyers Section. Year after year, this workshop has proved to garner increasing interest amongst law students eager to sharpen their interview skills, with over 40 law students attending this year. Law students were able to hear first-hand experiences from various judges, lawyers, judicial clerks, and legal recruiters regarding the key to nailing the interview process and how to present the best version of yourself to potential employers. Starting with in-depth panel discussions on what makes a resume stand out and the dos and don’ts of interviewing, the event transitioned into one-on-one mock interviews between the attorney volunteers and law students, followed with detailed feedback tailored to each of the interviewees and a networking lunch.
With students still adjusting from an online-exclusive world, events such as this are as imperative as ever. Maintaining the utmost professionalism and preparation from the early stages of landing a job translates to civility in the workplace and in the courtroom and ensures that each of these law students are equipped with the skills necessary to interact with clients, opposing counsel, judges, courtroom staff, and the like. The knowledge acquired by law students at the workshop will undoubtedly assist them in conquering the upcoming interview season, and even served as a helpful reminder for the seasoned volunteer attorneys.
