This past weekend, the State Bar of Michigan Young Lawyers Section held our annual meeting and new council retreat in Bay City, Michigan. When I walked into the City Office co-working space, I expected to enter a sterile environment filled with cubicles and fifty shades of grey. But if the top level being an arcade with an impressive pinball tournament in progress was any indication, I was dead wrong. I took the elevator downstairs into a modern communal area filled with good vibes, lots of desks, and a golf putting area. It really got me thinking about the benefits of a fun-designed communal workspace instead of a traditional office space.

A fun-designed communal workspace fosters creativity, collaboration, and well-being among team members. Bright colors, playful furniture, and innovative layouts can spark inspiration and make the environment more inviting, encouraging spontaneous interactions and idea-sharing. This dynamic setting helps break down hierarchical barriers—which are all too common in the legal field—promoting a sense of community and belonging, which can enhance team morale and productivity. Additionally, incorporating elements like relaxation zones or game areas allows employees to recharge, ultimately leading to improved focus and job satisfaction. Because the type of law I practice can involve very heavy topics, this is critical. By prioritizing a vibrant and engaging workspace, law firms can cultivate a positive culture that attracts and retains top talent. While I do not expect firms to jump at this idea, I think there is a piece of this concept that can be incorporated at a micro level to boost productivity and team effort.
