As I conclude my term as Chair of the Young Lawyers Section (YLS), I find myself reflecting on the experiences and lessons learned throughout the past year. It’s been quite a ride, and I want to share some insights that I hope resonate with my fellow young lawyers. Leading an organization filled with passionate and driven individuals has been incredibly rewarding, and along the way, I’ve learned a few lessons that could help anyone navigating their early career in law.
- Prioritize Inclusivity and Encouragement
One of the biggest takeaways is making sure everyone feels heard and valued. I know it can be intimidating to be new in a group, but it’s vital that we hear and value everyone’s voice, whether it’s their first meeting or they’ve been involved for years. Encouraging open dialogue helps foster a culture of inclusivity and trust, which can transform the dynamics of our organization. Moreover, I wanted to focus on building bonds that transcend beyond the meeting room. These connections can enrich our experiences and create a supportive network that extends into our professional lives. - Embrace Flexibility
Flexibility is essential. We all lead busy lives and it’s important to recognize that sometimes, people won’t be able to make it to meetings or events, and that’s perfectly okay. It is important to focus on each member’s strengths and how they can contribute in their own unique ways. Everyone brings something unique to the table, and by recognizing and valuing those strengths, we can build a stronger organization that thrives on collaboration. - Be Good to Yourself
Many of us are perfectionists, and sometimes our own worst critics. It’s easy to push ourselves too hard, especially when we’re trying to make an impact. I’ve learned that taking time for self-care isn’t just important; it’s necessary. Acknowledging your hard work and celebrating small wins can do wonders for your motivation and well-being. Don’t forget that you’re in this for the long haul, and it’s okay to take a step back and recharge. - Embrace Technology
This past year, we made a big leap by implementing Slack to improve communication among council members and reduce the avalanche of emails that fill our inboxes. With the sheer volume of messages we all deal with daily, having a platform that streamlines conversations made a huge difference. Embracing technology isn’t just a trend; it’s a practical way to enhance collaboration and keep everyone informed. - Don’t Take for Granted the People and Experiences You Have
One of the most rewarding aspects of volunteering with YLS has been the incredible people I’ve had the privilege to work alongside and the experiences we’ve shared. While it may seem like your involvement will last forever, the reality is that time flies. So, cherish the relationships you build and the lessons you learn along the way. Those connections are often the most valuable part of the journey.
Moving Forward Together
As I step away from my role as Chair, I’m genuinely excited to see how YLS will continue to evolve. My hope is that all of you—fellow young lawyers—take these lessons to heart as you navigate your careers. Each experience, whether it’s a challenge or a triumph, contributes to our growth as professionals and as a community. Remember, the journey through law is not just about achieving milestones; it’s also about building relationships and learning from one another.
