The Michigan Center for Civic Education is dedicated to the continuation of the Mock Trial Program, and takes donations for those willing to help ensure that students continue to have an educational and valuable experience. High school mock trial offers a wealth of benefits for participating students, extending far beyond simply learning about the legal system.
The importance of civic education and mock trial enables students to have access to skills and training from real practicing attorneys and judges, and potentially instill in them the passion and desire for justice that many legal professionals have. Students gain valuable insights into the workings of the legal system, including courtroom procedures and legal terminology.
Students learn to analyze complex legal cases, evaluate evidence, and construct logical arguments. They must think on their feet, responding to unexpected questions and challenges during the trial. Mock trial provides a platform for students to practice and refine their public speaking abilities. They learn to articulate their thoughts clearly and persuasively, gaining confidence in their communication skills. This further can spark an interest in legal careers and other fields that will require strong analytical and communication skills
In essence, high school mock trial provides a unique and engaging opportunity for students to develop essential skills that will benefit them throughout their academic and professional lives.
MCCE is also committed to expanding access to the law and justice. Its new companion programs encourage the storytelling necessary to tell the human experience inside the courtroom. Courtroom Artists illustrate the stories and Courtroom Journalists report on the information for the whole world to see, understand, and appreciate. Moreover, MCCE is dedicated to providing accessibility to current and future members of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities and their interpreters. ASL interpreters who are seeking ‘hands up’ time in courtrooms may use the high school mock trial series to approximate the real life of the courtroom while earning additional training hours for their certificate credentials.
