Honoring the Past, Celebrating the Present: A Black History Month Tribute to Michigan’s Legal Legends

As an attorney, it is both a privilege and a responsibility to honor the trailblazers who have paved the way for so many of us in the legal profession.

This year, as part of Michigan’s Black History Month celebrations, I had the privilege of joining fellow attorneys and community members at The Detroit Pizza Bar to honor Black legal legends who have shaped our state’s legal landscape. Organized by the State Bar of Michigan’s Young Lawyers Section, the Straker Bar Association, and the University of Detroit Mercy Law School, the event brought together attorneys, judges, law students, and professionals to reflect on the progress made—and the work that still lies ahead. We were honored by the attendance of four distinguished judges, whose careers exemplify leadership and commitment to justice. Their stories underscored the importance of representation within the judiciary and inspired those of us in the room to push forward in our own paths.

A highlight of the evening was the presence of Judge Denise Langford-Morris, the first Black woman appointed to the Oakland County Circuit Court. Her pioneering work continues to pave the way for future generations, setting a standard of excellence and reminding us that barriers can be broken with courage and persistence.

However, the highlight of the evening was the presence of Judge Denise Langford-Morris, a legendary figure whose impact cannot be overstated. Judge Langford-Morris, the first Black woman to be appointed as a judge in Oakland County Circuit Court, is an icon whose groundbreaking work continues to inspire countless individuals, particularly women and people of color striving to make a difference in the legal profession. Her contributions have not only paved the way for future generations but have also set a standard for excellence in the courtroom.

Throughout the evening, guests shared personal reflections on how these Black legal trailblazers opened doors once firmly shut. It was a powerful reminder that today’s successes rest on the shoulders of those who stood tall against adversity.

I am proud to have played a part in this meaningful tribute. It reinforced why we must celebrate the achievements of Black attorneys and judges, honor those who came before us, and continue pushing for a more equitable legal system. As we reflect on Black History Month, let us remember that the journey toward justice requires unity, resilience, and the unwavering belief that together, we can build a better future.
