The American Bar Association House of Delegates convened in Chicago during the 2026 ABA Annual Meeting to consider a wide range of policy recommendations affecting the legal profession, the administration of justice, and access to legal services. As the ABA’s policymaking body, the House brings together delegates from state and local bar associations, ABA entities, and affiliated organizations to debate and vote on resolutions that guide the Association’s advocacy and priorities.

This year’s meeting reflected the breadth of issues currently facing the legal profession. Delegates considered resolutions addressing legal ethics, judicial independence, access to justice, artificial intelligence, attorney wellness, immigration, and improvements to the delivery of legal services. While each proposal varied in scope, the common thread throughout the meeting was the profession’s effort to adapt to changing legal, technological, and societal landscapes while remaining committed to the rule of law.

One topic that continued to receive significant attention was diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), particularly in connection with ABA law school accreditation standards. Delegates discussed proposed changes to accreditation language in light of the evolving legal and regulatory landscape surrounding DEI initiatives. The conversation reflected differing viewpoints on how accreditation standards should promote access to the legal profession while complying with recent legal developments. 

Beyond specific policy proposals, the House devoted considerable attention to issues affecting the justice system more broadly. Resolutions addressed preserving public confidence in the judiciary, improving access to legal representation, supporting attorney wellness, and modernizing the delivery of legal services. Collectively, these discussions reinforced the ABA’s longstanding commitment to strengthening the legal system and improving access to justice.

In addition to the work of the House of Delegates, the Annual Meeting offered attorneys from across the country numerous opportunities for continuing legal education, committee meetings, and networking events. ABA sections, divisions, and forums presented educational programming on emerging legal issues and practical developments across a wide range of practice areas, while delegates also received reports from ABA leadership and various commissions highlighting ongoing initiatives affecting the profession.

The 2026 House of Delegates meeting in Chicago demonstrated the ABA’s continued role as the national voice of the organized bar. Through thoughtful debate, collaboration, and careful consideration of resolutions, delegates addressed issues that will influence legal education, the practice of law, and the administration of justice in the years ahead. As the legal profession continues to evolve, the work of the House of Delegates remains an important reflection of the challenges and opportunities facing lawyers nationwide.
