On July 25, 2026, SBM-YLS hosted its annual ZooLAWgical event at the Detroit Zoo. This event highlights areas and topics associated with animal law, allowing members and other guests to learn more about this niche area of law. After hearing from guest speakers, attendees enjoyed lunch under the pavilion and had access to the entire zoo to explore the wonders of animals from near and far.

This year’s speakers were Yara Khalil from the Ingham County Public Defenders Office and Julie Fershtman from Foster Swift. Yara spoke on admitting other acts of animal abuse as propensity evidence in a defendant’s criminal case, presenting research and case studies that supported her position. Julie spoke on the ins and outs of building an animal law practice, educating all attendees on breaking into this career field and maintaining a successful law practice. Both guest speakers were met with inquisitive questions and thought-provoking comments, and it was a pleasure to hear them speak about topics they were so passionate about.
